The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Women’s Health has expanded to Hawai‘i Island with Dr. Kareem Khozaim’s practice at the Bay Clinic in Hilo. Dr. Khozaim is the first paid faculty part of the John A. Burns School of Medicine to be stationed on Hawai‘i Island, and he brings to the area his expertise on global health and rural medicine.
The expansion of the department will address the growing physician shortage in the State of Hawai‘i. Back in 2016, it was estimated that the state was short of 700 doctors, including a dire need on the neighbor islands.
On May 12, 2017, a luncheon was held at the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo, Hawai’i, to celebrate the collaborative efforts between the University of Hawai’i John A. Burns School of Medicine Department of Ob/Gyn, Bay Clinic, Hilo Medical Center, and the County of Hawai’i in achieving this expansion. Our very own Department Chair, Dr. Ivica Zalud, Ob/Gyn Residency Program Director, Dr. Mark Hiraoka, the Dean of the John A. Burns School of Medicine, Dr. Jerris Hedges, and Dr. Kareem Khozaim, were in attendance.
